Red Bull Racing

Red Bull Racing

Austrian energy drink magnate, Dietrich Mateschitz purchased the assets of Jaguar Racing at the end of 2004 and Red Bull Racing was born. The team produced a string of strong midfield results over the next few seasons, purchasing Minardi along the way and creating the team's sister team, Scuderia Toro Rosso. The team's breakthrough came in 2009 when they took their first victories.

The 2009 season's runner-up but for many the team to beat as they finished the season with the strongest car and much of the RB5's design philosophy may filter down to the chasing pack. The off-season has centred around the RB6's power plant but with the decision to stick with Renault, the team will now be fully focussed on hitting the track with Adrian Newey's next generation of the Red Bull family. On the back of by far the team's most successful season with the team's first victory being followed by five more, the team have reason to be optimistic. However, they shouldn't be complacent as there were too many mistakes in 2009, both by the drivers and the team. Still, with the young Sebastian Vettel and the fully fit-again Mark Webber in their armoury, Red Bull will only have their eyes on one place in the 2010 standings.

2009 Position: 2nd, 153.5 Points

First Driver

Sebastian Vettel

When Sebastian Vettel replaced an injured Robert Kubica at the 2007 US Grand Prix finishing eighth he became the youngest point scorer in Formula 1. Toro Rosso quickly snapped him up and a year later he added the youngest race winner record. Forward another year and with the switch to Red Bull he found himself in the Championship fight, eventually finishing runner-up: Nothing short of meteoric from a driver who was largely anonymous before F1.

2009: 2nd, 84 Points
Second Driver

Mark Webber

Mark Webber never seemed to have much luck but in 2009 it finally came good. Then again, having out-raced all previous team mates, Sebastian Vettel proved a tougher test. That said, the Australian came into the season hampered by a broken leg, the result of a cycling accident over the winter, and which clearly affected him in the early stages of the season. However, Mark has now finally got over the hurdle of winning his first race and 2010 carries much promise.

2009: 4th, 69.5 Points
Reserve Driver

Daniel Ricciardo
Brendon Hartley

Australia's Ricciardo and New Zealand's Hartley are reserve drivers for both Red Bull and Toro Rosso. Ricciardo won the British Formula 3 Championship in 2009 in dominant fashion, a series that Hartley finished third in the previous year. Hartley followed that with an indifferent season in the Formula 3 Euroseries and, despite also being the team's reserve driver last year, was overlooked by Toro Rosso in favour of Jaime Alguersuari.
