Korean International Circuit

Built on 425 acres of reclaimed land beside an artificial seaside lake, the rural location of the Korean International Circuit sets it apart from the busy, metropolis locations of the majority of its Far Eastern counterparts. The circuit features three distinct sections. Firstly there are a series of high-speed straights connected by tight corners. These are followed by a series of twisting turns switching left and right and presenting drivers a conundrum as to the quickest way to tackle them. A a lot of time can be gained or lost in this section. Finally, there is a tight street-circuit section, with walls pressing in on both sides. The change is abrupt and caught Mark Webber out in spectacular style in 2010.

The changing character makes the circuit demanding on both drivers and teams, with compromises to be made between downforce and straight-line speed as well as requiring good traction. The weather can also be highly unpredictable, with heavy rain a possibility.

Circuit Map

The Korea International Circuit at Yeongam presents a very complete challenge for the cars and the drivers: long straights in the opening sector, and then a much tighter second half of the circuit, which includes some blind corners and tricky, narrow sections between concrete walls. That means that aerodynamic set-up is a balancing act between the differing needs of each sector.

There are a number of low-speed, technical corners, such as the sequence from turns four to six or turns 15 and 16 towards the end of the lap. Getting the right balance through these corners is critical to a quick lap and requires good turn-in and traction at the exit.

Key Points

Turns 1 and 2 - Turn 1 tightens up in to Turn 2 before opening up on to the long straight. A good line is essential in order to maximise speed down the straight.

Turn 3 - a sharp right-hander following on from the fast straight that offers drivers their best chance to pass.
