N  Glossary

NACA
A slit-shaped air inlet on the surface of the body for better cooling. It allows air to be drawn into an internal duct with a minimal disturbance to the flow. Originally developed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (precursor to NASA).

National Colours
Before sponsorship liveries came into use, cars competing in Formula One (and other international motorsport competitions) customarily painted their cars in racing colours reflecting the nation of origin of the car or driver. The main ones being British Racing Green (Britain), blue (France), red (Rosso Corsa, Italy), white or silver (Germany, right), white with red "sun" (Japan) and white with blue lengthwise stripes or blue with white lengthwise stripes (USA). Germany's silver colour scheme was actually born out of an effort to save weight by leaving the metal bodywork bare. The tradition is now reflected in McLaren-Mercedes current colour scheme as does Ferrari and Toyota's liveries.

Nomex®
Artificial fibre which undergoes thermal testing in the laboratory. It is subjected to an open flame with a temperature of 300 to 400 degrees Celsius that acts on the material from a distance of three centimetres – only if it fails to ignite within 10 seconds can it be used for racing overalls. The drivers' and pit crews' underwear, socks and gloves are also made of Nomex®.

Normally Aspirated Engine
An engine that uses intake air at atmospheric pressure and temperature to mix with the fuel for combustion. Generally this means that the intake is not assisted by a supercharger or turbocharger. All Formula 1 engines are currently normally aspirated as super- and turbochargers are forbidden by the FIA.

Nose or Nose Cone
Front part of a Formula 1 car, subjected to various crash tests for safety reasons. The nose also functions as a protruding crash structure protecting the monocoque.
