After all the rain for the first two days, Silverstone produced a dry race against most expectations. It probably meant a few too many wet set-ups but it did throw up one novelty – the ten Q3 runners having a free choice of starting tyre. It’s a situation that some believe should always happen. As it was, with all twenty-four drivers armed with a plenty of unused slick tyres it meant a bit more variety in tyre strategy than may have otherwise occurred, although two-stopping was pretty much standard practice…

Silverstone produced a qualifying session almost as chaotic as its car parking arrangements as rain dictated proceedings. First Jenson Button went out in Q1 thanks to a yellow flag and worsening conditions on his final run. Q2 was then hit by a red flag as the water deepened. And so to Q3, which turned into a two-way battle between Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber…

Few circuits have undergone as many changes as Formula One’s first circuit: Silverstone. Indeed, the changes even start before that 1950 British Grand Prix which started it all off. A very different looking circuit layout greeted the drivers in 1948. After that it was a tail of gradual change, largely in the name of safety until 2010. Britain has a proud history in Formula One. The country has produced ten world champions and over 200 race wins, and the majority of competing teams have been born right here in Blighty. Originally an RAF airfield during war time, Silverstone is officially the home grand prix for three of the current teams, although another five are based in the immediate surrounding area.

After three street circuits in a row, Formula One turns to something completely different – the open spaces, powerful straights and high-speed sweeping curves of Silverstone.
