So after the month long summer break it was onwards to Valencia and the European Grand Prix. There were two changes to team personnel as Romain Grosjean was promoted to the race seat at Renault following the sacking of Nelson Piquet Jr while Luca Badoer would substitute for the injured Felipe Massa at Ferrari.

Rubens Barrichello took full advantage as Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel struggled in an extremely wet qualifying session by clinching pole position at his home Grand Prix. Button was left in 14th with Vettel two places further back while Mark Webber completes the front row as both Red Bull and Brawn endured mixed fortunes.

Just two races to go in the 2009 Formula One season and a third place in Brazil would give Jenson Button the title regardless of where his rivals finish. Sebastian Vettel and Rubens Barrichello will have something to say about that and so might the weather but with Brawn GP needing just half a point to take the Constructors’ trophy, even if Red Bull pull off a perfect 1-2 finish, that competition will surely be done and dusted this weekend.

After a two-year break, the ever popular Suzuka International Racing Course returns to the Formula One calendar. With just three races remaining, there is a chance that both the Driver’s and Constructor’s Championships could be decided this weekend. Jenson Button would just need to outscore Rubens Barrichello by five points to put him beyond the reach of both his team mate and Sebastian Vettel. Meanwhile Brawn only need to finish within 6 points of Red Bull to claim the title in their first season.

In a season where, for much of the year, he’s been in the car to beat only to find himself eclipsed by Jenson Button, Rubens Barrichello put in an authoritative performance to triumph at the European Grand Prix. As Red Bull came away from Valencia empty-handed, the victory moves the Brazilian up to second in the Championship but it was the way he clinched victory that should make people sit up and pay attention.

Barrichello seemed like a different man from the driver we saw earlier in the season where too …
