Schumi The Way To Go Home

Michael Schumacher will be hanging up his helmet and retiring from Formula One. Déjà vu? Almost but not quite as it’s a very different Schumacher that leaves the sport for a second time. A bit less of an aura of invincibility surrounds the German – he may be human and not half machine after all. However, that might not be all such a bad thing.

Despite rumours circulated by certain members of the German press that Red Bull were calling for mandatory three stops such was the degree of tyre degradation reportedly observed during qualifying, Jenson Button dominated the Belgian Grand Prix from start to finish via just a solitary visit to the pit lane. Changeable weather conditions always seem to produce exciting qualifying sessions and Hockenheim qualifying was to prove no exception. Oddly, a different tyre type was needed in each session with mediums in Q1, intermediates in Q2 and full wets in Q3 as the track became progressively wetter. Once again it was Jean-Eric Vergne who fell foul of the first cut-off, failing to progress beyond the first session for the sixth time this season, just five hundredth’s of a second behind Michael Schumacher in 17th…

Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher went quickest on the first day of practice with a best time of 1 minute 35.973s but Lewis Hamilton, quickest in the damp first session, wasn’t far behind for McLaren and looked like he would beat it until he lost time in the final sector. Team mate Jenson Button, however, was left complaining of “way too much understeer” to his race engineer…
