Doom and Gloom in the World of F1

While Formula One gets down to the serious business of testing its latest batch of finely tuned chargers, behind the scenes things would appear to be not so rosy. Global viewing figures are down, the last few months have been dominated by headlines bemoaning an influx of “pay drivers” and HRT finally put its hands up in surrender and was carted off by a scrap dealer. Yet is the sport really in such dire straights?

In India the drivers were asked to sign some children’s artwork, and so for this week’s Caption This… we plumped for the Toro Rosso pairing of Sebastian Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari, mostly because recent performances suddenly reminded us that they actually exist. Jenson Button returns to the scene of his first Formula One victory in 2006 leading the championship. However, it has been all about Red Bull for the last two races and Button’s lead has been cut to 21 points. It seems all but confirmed that Sebastien Bourdais has been dropped by Toro Rosso, the team seemingly waiting until after this weekend to announce that Spain’s Jaime Alguersuari (a name I’m going to be permanently having to copy and paste for the rest of the year) will be taking over – before that he has one last World Series by Renault race to look forward to at Le Mans.

So, Sebastien Bourdais? Or Jaime Alguersuari? Actually, before we get to that, I thought we’d better compare Bourdais to his team mate …
