Are The New Teams Welcome?

Bernie Ecclestone seems to have had a slight change of heart about the new teams. At the start of November, his attitude on Lotus, Virgin and Hispania was that “… We need to get rid of a few of those cripples. They do nothing for us. They are an embarrassment.” By the end of the month, perhaps realising that maybe it isn’t such a great idea to criticise the sport he runs, Ecclestone was happy to point the finger of blame for it all…

As the battle of the Lotuses (Loti? I’ve never been sure about that) rumbles on, the question I’ve been asking myself is ‘why have Group Lotus suddenly become interested in the Team Lotus brand?’ After all, they’ve lost a case against Team Lotus Ventures before so what makes them think they can win this time and, more to the point, why do they want to? Is it simply a case of protecting their own interests as they claim, or are they simply drumming up PR ahead of the launch of …

I am really surprised about which direction the support for the 107% qualifying rule is coming from. Ferrari yes, we’re quite clear on the fact that they’re not exactly best friends with the riff raff down at the other end of the pitlane. Similarly, I can easily understand why other front running teams might not like having to repeatedly lap slow backmarkers. Fans will have their opinion one way or another, personally I’m against the idea but what is really surprising is that the FIA is so keen on the …

How nice it is to move on from USF1 and actually talk about the three teams that will be in Bahrain? Most of the attention is inevitably focussed on the sharp end of the grid with four World Champions and a raft of teams all looking capable of winning a race in 2010. Yet, for me at least, the back of the grid is every bit as intriguing. Three new teams hoping to make their mark, perhaps only hoping to survive their first season, and having got to Bahrain in …

We are less than 2 weeks from the start of the 2010 F1 season which should have 4 new teams. Lotus seem to be in good condition. They are financially sound and their car seems to be reliable. Virgin are in good financial condition but their car has not shown the reliability that the rest of the field have. Campos have been taken over and the new owner seems less than impressed with the job done by his predecessor. And then there is USF1 which launched with a fanfare then …

When the FIA announced back in June that USF1, Campos and Manor (as it was then) would join the grid for 2010 there was some surprise at the choice. The more experienced Prodrive and Lola had been overlooked, the seemingly well financed and well organised Epsilon Euskadi was ignored and there were more than a few disgruntled team owners. In the words of Lola’s Martin Birrane, “One of three that has been chosen is worthy in my view. They will have a proper car. The other two – who knows?” …
